Email Security  –  Using Web Based Email Safely

Do not reuse usernames and passwords. If one PC or account is compromised, all your accounts can be compromised.

Consider multiple email/chat usernames –

Have a main account where you connect with friends, social networking, politics etc. but never use it for purchases or financial transactions. You can give this out freely.

Do not mix business and pleasure. Keep them separate.

Consider having one exclusive account where you ONLY perform financial transactions.

Always use an exclusive username and password here. Never link that account to social networking sites like Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn.

Consider throw away accounts, and use them when you are unsure of those you are dealing with.  Email accounts are generally available free from Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo, Google etc.

Often your Internet Provider (Time Warner, Verizon, Etc.) gives you free accounts. (but remember, you loose these if you change Internet providers, so don’t use them as your main account)

Create an exclusive account for on-line purchases. Unfortunately many security threats come from merchants who don’t value security highly enough and your information can be stolen. Eg: The Sony Gaming Fiasco, LinkedIn, eHarmony, Heartbleed, Target, Ebay  all have  suffered data breaches.

Using Credit Cards for Online Purchases

Consider using a special service from your Bank or Credit Card Provider that creates a temporary virtual credit card alias linked to your account for online purchases, if they are available. Eg:” Safeshop” from Bank of America, Citibank’s “Virtual Account Numbers”, Discover Card’s “Secure Online Account Numbers”. Tell your bank you want such a service if they don’t already provide it. Don’t trust vendors, merchants and credit card possessors to keep your information secure.

Increasing Your Restaurant’s Bottom Line: Desserts & Specialty Beverages Pt 2.

partners320header

One of the ways to increase your profits and bottom line is to sell more to each customer each time they visit you. Selling desserts is an excellent way to do this.

Desserts are not just about sweet, heavy, fattening treats. When your guests say no to dessert because of the calories or heaviness, think dessert beverages. Think beyond the simple teas & plain coffees they can have at home. Give than occasion to splurge. Think beyond the brandies, cordials and standard dessert wines, be creative. There are thousands of creative recipes online for dessert beverages that say WOW! Discover a select few of those special ones and make them your own.

In the summertime think special chilled alcoholic and non alcoholic frosty and fruity deserts. Iced coffees & teas. Specialty Lemonades, cranberry and cider drinks.

In the colder months, think specialty spiced mulled desserts based on fruit ciders and juices, with or without fruit mixed in. They can be brewed up quickly and easily. Many are designed to be refrigerated overnight, it intensifies their flavor. They can be refrigerated for days and then quickly microwaved in seconds for serving hot when requested.  They can be made non-alcoholic and have liqueurs added to them only if requested.  It is always easier to justify a higher price when alcohol is involved. These beverages are truly versatile.

There are hundreds of hot and iced specialty tea and coffee drinks that are light and delicious. They can be alcoholic or non alcoholic. They can have spices, flavorings and fruit added to create truly unique offerings.

Dessert does not have to be fattening.  And teas have an added advantage of a very healthy image. Not at all the image of a fatty, sinful dessert choice.

If you serve families, having an adult specialty beverage or dessert and a non alcoholic version available especially for the kids will make them feel just like an adult too. Just be careful you don’t mix them up upon serving. Often designing them to be finished at the table can help avoid confusions.

Even heavy desserts can be modified to meet dietary requirements like gluten free. If you have special dietary offerings like gluten free entrees, do you offer those diners special gluten free desserts? Individuals with dietary restrictions often are the first to jump at dessert options that meet their special restrictions. They welcome the opportunity to feel free again from having to be so much more careful than everyone else. Give them a reason to say “YES”, instead of “I wish I could, but…”

Can’t afford your own pastry chef? There are many local bakers that will gladly design and make a signature dessert for your exclusive use. You can even add some excitement and drama by finishing it yourself at the table by adding that last special flourish by drizzling special sauces on it, adding garnishes, or shaved chocolate to it at the guest’s table to give it your  own unique signature touch.

And remember, it is much easier for your wait staff to sell that dessert and increase your bottom line if you use your website, social media, email and visual stimulation to pre –sell your customers.

What caused the recent Internet outage

partners320header

The attack that interrupted major portions of the internet recently was made possible by a newly released malware called “Mirai”.  It can infect security cameras, DVRs, cable & DSL routers, any devices connected to the internet like your printers, lights, thermostats, locks, not just your smartphone and your PC. It could even theoretically infect your new car. It allows the cyber criminals to use your internet connected devices to attack and cripple selected websites and servers on the Internet.

Why it was so easy to hack the cameras that took down the web

Increasing Your Restaurant’s Bottom Line: Desserts & Specialty Beverages Pt 1.

partners320headerIncreasing your sales of Desserts & Specialty Beverages is the perfect way to painlessly and inexpensively increase your bottom line.

Most restaurants make an effort to accomplish this by having their servers verbally ask if the guest would like dessert before presenting the check to the guest. Just saying we have “Black Forest Cake” for dessert is not enough. Better yet is coaching your servers to enthusiastically say something like “Our Black Forest Cake is to die for”.

You need to help the server make that add on sale. Studies have shown that little things like just having the hostess or host enthusiastically remind the guest “Don’t forget to save room for one of our incredible desserts” as they are being seated or handed their menus can increase dessert sales by 30 to 50 percent.

Dessert carts are the perfect way to display your exclusive signature desserts. If that is inconvenient or impractical, having the host/hostess direct the guest’s attention to a well dressed dessert display case  as they are waiting to be seated or entering the dinning room to be seated while reminding them  “to save room for dessert” is an excellent alternative.

Just listing desserts on a menu like “Black Forest Cake – 5.99” does not do the dessert justice.

Separate professionally designed dessert menus provide the focus and the space for you to properly describe and picture your signature dessert selections.

Using Websites, Email Newsletters & Social Media like Facebook are the perfect way to increase your sales and your bottom line. You can help pre-sell the guest on your signature desserts long before they even enter your establishment.

You can create beautiful and visually appealing images and prose to promote your offerings on website menus.

If you send your regular guests email newsletters you can use the space there to periodically promote the specialty desserts in an appealing manner. Just running a special offer occasionally in your emails will create an awareness of it in the future for your guest, even if they don’t redeem that special offer at that time.

This is even more true if the offer is made to your regular followers on Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterst. You have the perfect opportunity to get exposure to your special offerings that will have that “Wow!” appeal.

Put yourself in the role of  a guest. Which approach will have a bigger impact on you?

Black Forest Cake  –  $5.99

Or:

Our Signature Black Forest Cake: AKA “WOW!”

Alternating layers of dark, rich chocolate cake; heavy whipped cream; and a mouth watering Chocolate Ganache overflowing with Kirsch infused dark sweet cherries.
Smothered in a sinfully rich whipped cream icing.
Topped with decadently dark chocolate shavings and sweet-tart cherries.
