Petya Not Ransomware?

partners320header

Ransomware or International Intrigue?

It now appears last week’s Petya attacks were not really targeting you. Most of the damage done was to innocent 3rd parties and was “collateral damage”. It was actually part of some type of international inter-government intrigue and not a real ransomware attack like the one of a few weeks ago.

1 in 10 anti-virus apps are actually malware

partners320header

1 in 10 anti-virus apps are actually malware.

Even official app stores like Apple’s & Goggle’s are full of anti-malware apps that are actually themselves malware. Be very careful when downloading such apps. Don’t assume that just because it is a popular download that it is legitimate. Do your research.

https://www.cnet.com/news/virus-scanners-filled-with-malware-are-flooding-app-stores/

“Of the 4,292 active anti-virus apps, 525 of them set off malware alarms for RiskIQ. That means that more than one in 10 anti-virus apps are traps waiting to push malware on your phone.

Of those 525 fake virus protectors, 508 of them are in the Google Play store, researchers said. The rest can come from third-party app stores. RiskIQ looked through 189 different app stores to find fake anti-viruses.”

Cybercrime Costs, $8 Trillion by 2022.

partners320header

Some 2.8 billion data records expected to be breached in 2017.

“Small-and mid-size businesses (SMBs) are expected to face the brunt of the attacks, given these organizations shelled out an average of under $4,000 a year in 2017 on cybersecurity efforts. The amount they spend is not expected to substantially increase over the next five years, despite rising threats and the fact that a number of small businesses run older software.

Running older software that has not been patched is just one problem that SMBs face. Another growing problem is the greater availability of easy to use ransomware toolkits that requires little to no programming skills on part of the cyberattacker, according to the report.”

Practicing Safe Computing

partners320header

Practice Safe Computing !

It is very important that you keep all your PCs updated.

1.) Your operating system should always have the latest updates applied.

2.) Your real-time anti-malware and anti-virus software should also be kept up to date daily.

3.) Your web browsers like Chrome or Firefox should always be up to date.

4.) Another important piece of software that should be constantly kept up to date is your Adobe Flash software. Many attacks hide in videos, pictures and emails.

5.) All other software should be updated regularly.

A majority of the latest security threats like the recent Wannacry Ransomware, and the even more worrisome Eternal Rocks threat can be minimized just by keeping your operating system, browsers, anti virus/ anti malware software and your applications up to date.
